History of Spring Hill Mall
Origins & The 1980s Boom
Rising from what was once D. Hill Nursery, the vision for Spring Hill Mall began in the late 1970s. By 1980, the mall celebrated its grand opening, quickly establishing itself as a regional commercial powerhouse. Supported by early anchors like Bergner-Weise and JCPenney, it served as a bustling retail and social center for decades.
Retail Evolution & Changing Anchors
As national retail trends shifted away from enclosed-mall formats, Spring Hill Mall began to see significant changes. The closure of JCPenney in 2011 was an early indicator of this shift. Despite efforts in 2015-2016 to introduce a new Cinemark theater and revitalize the layout, subsequent anchor closures—including Carson's in 2018, Sears in 2019, Macy's in 2020, and Barnes & Noble relocating in 2021—underscored the need for a fundamental reimagining of the property.
Public Acquisition & The Path Forward
Recognizing the critical importance of this 100+ acre site to the community, the Village of West Dundee finalized the purchase of the mall property through 2023 and 2024. The mall officially closed its doors in 2024, paving the way for demolition starting in 2025. This bold acquisition strategy gives the Village control over the site's destiny, ensuring orderly redevelopment and a vision that aligns with the future needs of West Dundee residents.
